Cooperative Purchasing Network

Three of the largest cooperative procurement programs for public agencies, educational institutions, and non-profit organizations are forming an independent alliance. In a statement, the alliance creators said the group would "represent excellence in cooperative procurement practices and other interests of the public procurement profession." The cooperative programs setting up the alliance are the National IPA, NJPA and TCPN.

The alliance casts a wide membership net. The coalition of industry participants "is open to public procurement practitioners, agencies, suppliers, cooperative programs and professional associations that can contribute to its benefit, said the statement announcing the initiative. "The result of this effort will be an independent voice advocating excellence in cooperative purchasing practices and focused on helping you achieve your purchasing objectives as effectively as possible," the statement explained. - Government Product News

Comptroller: Report on Student Loan Debt

On December 5th, Comptroller Susan Combs issued a new report examining the growth in tuition costs and the impact on student loan debt. From the accompanying press release:

"In Footing the Bill: Rising College Costs, Deepening Debt, the Comptroller's office details impacts of student loan debt; factors driving increases in tuition costs contributing to this debt; reasons students have remained willing to incur these debts; and potential ways to slow the growth of higher education costs."

Comptroller: Report on Workforce in Texas

It's no secret that Texas leads the nation in the creation of good jobs. However, many of the state's employers say they cannot find workers with the skills they need. This skills gap points to the need for Texas to expand and diversify its educational and training pathways, according to a report released in July by Texas Comptroller Susan Combs. The report, titled Workforce - Capitalizing on Our Human Assests indicates that the state's under-18 population grew by more than 979,000 between 2000 and 2010, or 6.5 times faster than the U.S. average. With these promising numbers, Texas should have a strong workforce if young workers receive proper training and education.

The Texas Association of Community College Marketers (TACCM is a statewide consortium of marketing and public relations professionals for public community and technical colleges in Texas) issued a media release explaining the role that can play in helping students explore career options.
