Topic review - Steve Johnson's legislative update for 16 March 15

House Appropriations

This past Thursday, the Appropriations Committee sent HB1 to the Legislative Budget Board (LBB) for final compilation of all committee decisions. Chairman Otto indicated that the bill would be back before the committee Thursday of this week for a vote. With that timing, HB1 would most likely be on the House floor for consideration sometime around April 1st.

House Higher Education

The committee is scheduled to hold a hearing on Wednesday, March 18th at 8:00 am in E2.014. The only bill the Committee is scheduled to hear is:

HB 100 Zerwas
Relating to authorizing the issuance of revenue bonds to fund capital projects at public institutions of higher education.

Senate Finance - Workgroup on Article III (Education)

The Workgroup met last week and made its first "pass" at Article III of the budget. Higher Education was considered on Wednesday - no decisions were made. The Workgroup will continue its deliberations during the upcoming week

Senate Higher Education

The committee is scheduled to hold a hearing on Wednesday, March 18th at 9:00 am in E1.012. Among the bills the committee will take up and consider are:

SB 347 Nichols
Relating to the governing board of the Trinity Valley Community College District.

SB 453 Seliger
Relating to minimum scores required for public school students to receive credit by an examination administered through the College-Level Examination Program.

SB 686 Seliger
Relating to the mathematics and science teacher investment fund for the Math and Science Scholars Loan Repayment Program.

SB 907 Perry
Relating to the powers and duties of the board of regents of the Texas Tech University System and to workers' compensation coverage for employees of the system's components.

SB 947 Zaffirini | et al.
Relating to a study and report by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board on the feasibility of providing off-campus employment positions through the Texas college work-study program.
