House. On Monday, January 12, the House unanimously passed legislation that would exempt volunteer firefighters from the healthcare law's employer mandate.

On Wednesday, January 14, the House passed legislation that would delay the implementation of a controversial provision in the 2010 Dodd-Frank Wall Street reform law, in a 271-154 vote.

Senate. On Wednesday, January 14 Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid is expected to return to the Senate in the coming days as the procedural battle over the approval of the Keystone XL pipeline heats up.

On Thursday, January 15 GOP Sen. Bob Corker, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said that the GOP-led chamber will move in a matter of weeks on legislation imposing more sanctions on Iran -- despite administration concerns it could imperil nuclear talks.

Administration. On Thursday, January15, the Obama Administration laid out new regulations easing travel, trade and banking restrictions on Cuba, swiftly following through on a historic policy change announced a little less than one month ago. Although U.S. tourist travel to Cuba is still prohibited under the five-decade-old economic embargo, the new rules make it easier to visit to the island for such purposes as family visits, humanitarian projects, professional research, journalism and eight other areas of other authorized travel.

On Friday, January 16, President Barack Obama participated in a joint White House news conference with British Prime Minister David Cameron. He is expected to publicly address for the first time in a week the terrorism threats gripping Europe.

On Friday, January 16, the Obama Administration announced its Medicare chief, CMS Administrator Marilyn Tavenner, is stepping down. Principal Deputy Administrator Andy Slavitt will be the acting administrator, HHS Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell said in a separate announcement.

Also, on Friday, January 16, President Obama warned new sanctions against Iran could derail progress toward a comprehensive nuclear deal and heighten the chances of war.

• On Thursday, January 22, the House Committee on Energy and Commerce will hold a hearing titled, “A Permanent Solution to the SGR: The Time Is Now Day 2.”
• On Thursday, January 22, the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions will hold hearings to examine job-based health insurance and defining full-time work.
